The path of powerAluminum castings are playing an ever important part in exploiting the lightweight-construction potentials of modern passenger cars since aluminum as a substitute for gray castings can mean a reduction in engine block weight of between 40 and 55 percent. As the heaviest individual component of the engine, the cylinder crankcase meanwhile plays a key role in the weight-reduction regimen. It is therefore not surprising that many manufacturers exploit this opportunity and in fact in 2006 for the first time the number of aluminum engine blocks is surpassing those in traditional gray cast iron.
