Low-pressure Die Cast Cylinder BlocksThe low-pressure casting process in use since the beginning of the seventies has meanwhile proved itself ideal for the production of cylinder crankshafts employed, for instance, in V-type gasoline and heavy-duty diesel engines.
To this end, a permanent mold is vertically filled slowly and with low turbulence at only slight overpressure (hence "low pressure"). Subsequent almost ideal directional solidification is controlled with a special cooling system. Thanks to KS Aluminium-Technologie's process proficiency, a casting of optimal quality is the outcome.
The silicon particles deposited by the hypereutectic aluminum-silicon alloy ALUSIL® are as used by KS Aluminium-Technologie, are exposed in a later machining step to form an optimal wear-resistant structure on the cylinder working surface.
Although solidification is slow and cycle times are correspondingly long, KS KS Aluminium-Technologie - thanks to its decades of experience in low-pressure permanent mold casting - has made this complex process competitive with pressure die-casting in the segment for cylinder crankcases on luxury cars.
